Project 1: Self Portrait Examination
I experimented with the direction of the text, which I feel I mastered. I experimented with colors, which I feel anyone can always improve on, and for the first time I printed it larger than 8.5 x 11 which I definitely struggled with, but also learned a lot from that I will improve for next time.
I drew inspiration from my own past art as this is the first piece I had made since last school year and it had been more than a year since I took a visual art class. I reflected on myself and the hold depression had on me in years past and wanted to show some of my improvement in this piece. I did however stick to my comfort zone as far as techniques go: creating digital art. In creating this piece, first, I started with the picture of myself and erased the whole background (which was difficult because it was an off white color so I had to use the eraser tool more than the magic wand tool). Then I created an all black layer, decreased the opacity, and merged it with a copy of the layer depicting me. I then placed the merged layers over the original layer of me which dulled the shades of white to black and emphasized the colors (specifically the red in my hand). Then I added the computer from which I started playing around with text stemming from it. I discovered the space in the middle of the three letters at the start of each phrase and intentionally picked phrases that would keep that space, then I added the repetition of similar shapes to the background to compliment it. Finally, it all came together in a unified manner when I made the text seem to go behind my hand. This made the text a guiding line that ended the viewer's eye at my hand. If I had to do this over I would have selected the CMYK color mode in Photoshop so that the red color in my hand would have come out more vibrant when printed. |
